DIY Layered Hot Cocoa Jars

It’s been chilly lately, so I know your friends and neighbors will appreciate this simple, but creative homemade hot cocoa gift.

A co-worker shared this clever DIY project with us. So, if you still have a few more people on your list, give them some chocolately warm goodness.

  • Hot Cocoa Mix
  • Small Candy Canes (easier to crush than the larger ones)
  • Mini Chocolate Chips
  • Mini Marshmallows
  • 6 ounce, glass mason jars (packs of 12 available at FloraDec and Ben Franklin Crafts)
  • Scotch Tape
  • Scissors
  • Wrapping Paper
  • Yarn



1. Crush the candy canes into tiny pieces either by hand or with a blender/food processor.

2. Fill the mason jar with your ingredients in layers:

  • Bottom Layer: hot cocoa mix (to about the 100 ml mark)
  • Second Layer: crushed candy cane bits
  • Third Layer: mini chocolate chips
  • Top Layer: mini marshmallows (stuff these down and fill them up to the top of the jar, this helps the layers from shifting around when transporting the jars)

3. Decorate the lid with wrapping paper.

  • The lids of mason jars separate into two pieces—a circular disc that makes up the center of the lid and a ring that secures the lid to the grooves on the top of the jar
  • Pull the two pieces apart
  • Take the circular disc and trace its outline on a piece of wrapping paper
  • Cut out the paper circle
  • Align the piece of paper with metal disc and tape it on

4. Add a yarn pom pom trim.
